Cabot Trail

If your thinking of visiting Cape Breton Island this summer I would highly recommend basing yourself here, north of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. This area is renouned for it natural beauty and has unlimited potential for outdoor adventure.
The hiking trails in and near the Aspy Bay - Pollets Cove Wilderness area offer breath taking coastal scenery and few other tourists. It's the norm to hike all day and not see anyone.
Whale watching is very popular in Bay St Lawrence. The pilot whales that spend the summer there are an added bonus when compared to the spectacular coastline.
The shape of the island insures there is a calm beach to launch your kayak from on one side or the other. The water along the coast can reach 65 degrees or more during August and the prevailing wind is from the southwest. Three large sheltered harbours that border on Aspy Bay offers mostly flat water paddling, great for family adventures.
Make your accomadation plans early though as the best places fill up quickly. There are also several nice campgrounds near by each with its own special features. If I were camping here I would be tempted to spend a night or two in each.
 Happy Travels
